Best Time to Visit Vienna
April - June · Spring (Best Overall)
Vienna's gardens are spectacular in spring (16-22°C). Schönbrunn's grounds are in full bloom, outdoor café terraces open up, and the city feels alive without peak summer crowds.
September - October · Autumn (Best Balance)
Harvest season in the Wachau Valley nearby, cooler but beautiful (12-18°C), and Vienna's museums are at their best without summer queues. Excellent value on accommodation.
July - August · Summer
Warm (22-28°C) and busy. The Vienna Philharmonic's outdoor summer concerts at Schönbrunn are free and spectacular. Prater park and city beer gardens are lively. Book ahead.
November - December · Christmas Markets
Austria arguably has Europe's best Christmas markets. Vienna's Rathausplatz and Schönbrunn markets are magical (2-6°C). Vienna Ball season runs January-March.

Best Day Trips from Vienna
Hallstatt
3 hrs from Vienna by train and ferry. The lakeside village is extraordinarily picturesque. Arrive early morning to beat the day trippers. The salt mine tour underground is excellent.
Wachau Valley
1.5 hrs from Vienna. Cruise or cycle through UNESCO vineyards, apricot orchards, and Melk Abbey along the Danube. Best in May (blossoms) or October (harvest).
Budapest
Just 2.5 hrs by Railjet train - one of Europe's great short rail journeys. A full day in Budapest or an overnight stay makes this an easy and rewarding extension to a Vienna trip.
