Best Time to Visit NYC

April to June · Spring (Best Overall)

Mild temperatures, Central Park in bloom, and the city at its most liveable. The major museums are open without summer crowds and hotel prices are reasonable. May is arguably the single best month to visit.

September to November · Fall

Crisp air, stunning fall foliage in Central Park, and the New York Marathon in November. One of the most beautiful times to be in the city. Slightly higher prices than spring but excellent conditions.

December to February · Winter

Cold but atmospheric. The Christmas markets and decorations make December magical. Ice skating at Rockefeller Center, fewer tourist queues, and lower hotel prices in January and February make winter worthwhile for the prepared traveller.

July and August · Summer

Hot, humid, and extremely crowded. Broadway goes into a slow period, hotel prices peak, and the city can feel overwhelming. That said, NYC in summer has its own energy, with outdoor events, rooftop bars, and the Coney Island beach all at their best.

NYC Travel Costs (Per Person)

Budget · $120–$180 / day

Hostel dorm, pizza slices and deli food, the subway everywhere, and free attractions like the Staten Island Ferry and the High Line. Many of NYC's greatest experiences are free.

Mid-Range · $250–$400 / day

A mid-range hotel in Manhattan or Brooklyn, meals at proper restaurants, museum admissions, and a Broadway show. New York is expensive by global standards but offers extraordinary value for what you get.

Luxury · $600+ / day

Manhattan's luxury hotels, tasting menus at world-famous restaurants, private tours, and premium Broadway seats. New York's luxury ceiling is essentially unlimited.
