New York City is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically depending on when you visit. The city has four distinct seasons, each with its own character, crowd levels, pricing, and things to do. This guide breaks down each season so you can plan your visit around the weather, your budget, and what you most want to experience.

New York City by Season

Spring (April to May)

Best for: Mild weather, blooming parks, and manageable crowds.

Spring is one of the best times to visit New York City. Temperatures are comfortable, Central Park comes into full bloom, and the city feels genuinely pleasant to walk around. April and May sit in the sweet spot before the summer heat and humidity arrive. Hotel prices are reasonable and the main attractions are busy but not overwhelming. The High Line, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the outdoor terraces across the city all come to life in spring.

Average: 10 to 20 degrees C

Summer (June to August)

Best for: Long days, rooftop bars, and outdoor events.

Summer is the busiest and most expensive time to visit New York. The city is packed with tourists and the heat and humidity can be intense, particularly in July. That said, the energy is extraordinary. Outdoor film screenings, concerts in Central Park, Shakespeare in the Park, Coney Island at full swing, and rooftop bars with Manhattan skyline views. If you are comfortable with crowds and heat, summer in New York has a version of the city you will not experience any other time of year.

Average: 24 to 32 degrees C

Autumn (September to November)

Best for: Crisp air, stunning foliage, and fewer summer crowds.

Autumn rivals spring as the best time to visit New York. September still feels warm and the city begins to calm down after the summer rush. October is arguably the single best month in the city. Central Park's foliage peaks, the air is crisp and clear, Broadway season is in full swing, and the streets feel alive without being overwhelming. November gets colder and quieter, but the approach to Thanksgiving brings its own energy and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is an experience unlike anything else.

Average: 10 to 22 degrees C

Winter (December to March)

Best for: Festive atmosphere, lower prices, and fewer queues.

Winter in New York is cold. Genuinely cold, with temperatures regularly below freezing in January and February. But December has a magic that makes it one of the most popular times to visit. Rockefeller Center's Christmas tree, the skating rinks, the department store window displays, and the holiday markets along the avenues transform the city. January and February are the quietest and cheapest months with far shorter queues at major museums and attractions. Pack properly and the rewards are significant.

Average: -4 to 8 degrees C
