Best Time to Visit Chicago
June to August · Summer (Best for Outdoors)
Chicago summers are spectacular, festivals almost every weekend, the lakefront beaches packed with locals, rooftop bars, outdoor concerts, and long warm evenings. Lollapalooza in August is one of America's great music festivals.
September and October · Fall
Excellent weather, fall foliage along the lakefront, and the city after summer peak. Some of the best restaurant reservations become available and hotel prices moderate.
April and May · Spring
Chicago spring can be unpredictable but rewards patience. The city comes back to life after winter with outdoor festivals, the lakefront path reopens properly, and hotel prices are at their most reasonable.
November to March · Winter
Chicago winters are genuinely brutal. That said, the city doesn't stop, with world-class museums, the restaurant scene at its most vibrant, and the Christmas Market on the Magnificent Mile. Dress extremely warmly.
Chicago Travel Costs (Per Person)
Budget · $90–$140 / day
Chicago is significantly cheaper than NYC or LA. Hostel accommodation, deep dish pizza slices, Chicago dogs, the free Millennium Park, and the L train system for cheap transport across the city.
Mid-Range · $180–$300 / day
A mid-range hotel in River North or Lincoln Park, the architecture river cruise, the Art Institute, restaurant dinners, and a Blues club cover. Chicago offers excellent value for a world-class American city.
Luxury · $400+ / day
The Magnificent Mile luxury hotels, tasting menus at Alinea or other world-ranked restaurants, private architecture tours, and rooftop suites with lake views. Chicago's luxury scene punches well above its weight.
