The 10 Best US National Parks
Grand Canyon (Arizona)
One mile deep, 277 miles long, and simply incomparable. Stand on the South Rim and look at the striations of geological time laid bare before you. The statistics don't capture the overwhelming scale and beauty.
Yellowstone (Wyoming/Montana/Idaho)
The world's first national park and still one of its finest. Geysers, hot springs, wildlife (bison, grizzlies, wolves), and canyons. Old Faithful erupts every 60-110 minutes like clockwork.
Yosemite (California)
Granite cliffs (El Capitan), waterfalls, giant sequoias, and the Mariposa Grove. The valley is spectacular but Glacier Point offers views that rival the best on earth.
Zion (Utah)
Red rock canyons and the Narrows walk through the Virgin River. Angels Landing hike offers views of the valley from 5,300 feet with chains bolted into the rock. Equally dramatic and less crowded than the South Rim.
Arches (Utah)
Natural stone bridges, arches, and formations in otherworldly red rock. Delicate Arch is iconic. Less crowded than Zion or Bryce. The Fiery Furnace hike is unforgettable.
Bryce Canyon (Utah)
Hoodoos, thin red rock spires standing in silent rows. Less visited than Zion or Arches but equally stunning. Best seen at sunrise. The rim trails are less strenuous than other Utah parks.
Glacier National Park (Montana)
Pristine wilderness with over 1,000 miles of trails. Mountain peaks, pristine lakes, and wildlife. Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of America's great scenic drives. Accessible July-October.
Great Smoky Mountains (Tennessee/North Carolina)
America's most visited national park, and with good reason: rolling mountains, hemlock forests, and abundant wildlife. Newfound Gap Road connects the Tennessee and North Carolina sides.
Moab Area (Utah)
Includes Arches, Canyonlands, and surrounding BLM land. A mecca for rock climbers and mountain bikers. Stunning red rock scenery in every direction. Mountain biking trails for all skill levels.
Acadia (Maine)
Only national park east of the Mississippi. Coastal cliffs, carriage roads, and Cadillac Mountain (highest point on the US East Coast). Jordan Pond Mirror offers reflection photography unlike anywhere else.
