Istanbul Travel Guide 2026

The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia rising above the Istanbul skyline

Istanbul is one of the world's great cities, the only metropolis spanning two continents, with 2,500 years of history written into its skyline. Byzantine churches became Ottoman mosques became UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Grand Bazaar has traded for 500 years. The Bosphorus has divided Europe and Asia for millennia. And the food, from simit to kebab to mezes on the Bosphorus waterfront, is extraordinary.

Best Time to Visit Istanbul

April - May · Spring (Best Overall)

Warm (16-22°C), tulip festivals in April (Emirgan Park has millions of tulips), manageable crowds before peak season, and perfect sightseeing weather. One of Istanbul's finest times.

September - October · Autumn (Best Balance)

Still warm (18-24°C), summer crowds gone, and the city feels calmer. October is excellent for mosque visits, bazaar shopping, and Bosphorus cruises without the July heat.

June - August · Summer

Hot (28-35°C) and very busy. Sultanahmet can be overwhelming. Early morning mosque visits are essential. Evenings are lively on rooftop bars and the Bosphorus.

November - March · Winter

Quieter and much cheaper. Mild (7-12°C) but can be rainy. Museums and mosques are uncrowded. Occasional snow makes the Blue Mosque skyline magical. Low season for good reason but very affordable.

Getting Around

Get an Istanbulkart (transit card) immediately on arrival. It covers tram, metro, ferry, and bus. Tram T1 runs through Sultanahmet, Eminönü, and Karaköy. Ferries cross the Bosphorus to the Asian side (Kadıköy and Üsküdar) cheaply and beautifully. Avoid taxis without a meter.

Hidden Gems in Istanbul

Balat Neighbourhood

A colourful, atmospheric neighbourhood on the Golden Horn with centuries of Greek, Jewish, and Armenian heritage. Rainbow-painted houses, antique shops, and excellent street art. Very few tourists.

Chora Church (Kariye Mosque)

One of the finest examples of Byzantine art anywhere in the world, extraordinary 14th-century mosaics and frescoes rivalling anything in Ravenna or Istanbul's more famous Byzantine monuments. Far less visited than Hagia Sophia.

Princes' Islands (Adalar)

A cluster of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara, 20km from Istanbul: no cars, horse-drawn carriages, wooden Ottoman villas, and peaceful beaches. A perfect half-day escape from the city bustle.

Karaköy Fish Market Alley

A tiny alley near the Galata Bridge where local restaurants cook fresh fish at almost no mark-up. Order whatever's being grilled on the street, a genuinely local and very cheap Istanbul meal.
