Why Visit Greece?
Few countries combine antiquity and beauty so seamlessly. Athens gives you the Acropolis and the best street food culture in the Mediterranean. The Cyclades islands offer scenery so photogenic it feels almost unreal. Crete is large enough to feel like a country in itself, with mountains, gorges, stunning beaches, and a local culture distinct from the rest of the islands.
Greece is also more accessible than many people assume. Budget airlines make island hopping surprisingly affordable, the ferry network is extensive, and outside the main tourist hotspots prices are genuinely reasonable. Go in the shoulder season and you get all the beauty with a fraction of the crowds.

Best Time to Visit Greece
May – June · Early Summer (Best Overall)
Warm (22–28°C), sea warm enough for swimming, flowers in bloom, Santorini and Crete without peak crowds. Ideal balance of good weather and manageable tourism.
September – October · Late Summer / Autumn (Best Value)
Still warm (20–26°C in September), sea beautifully warm from summer, dramatic reduction in crowds and prices. October is quieter but weather holds well in the south.
July – August · Peak Summer
Hot (28–35°C), dry, and spectacular, but crowded and expensive, especially Mykonos and Santorini. Book everything months ahead. The Meltemi wind cools things in the Cyclades.
November – March · Winter
Most islands close down. Athens is mild (10–15°C) and great for ancient sites without queues. Crete stays partially open. Thessaloniki in winter has a strong local culture and is underrated.

Flying In
Athens International Airport (ATH) has excellent connections across Europe. Many UK and European airports fly direct to Greek island airports in season: Heraklion (Crete), Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos, Corfu, and more.

Train + Ferry from Europe
Overland from Western Europe via the Balkans is possible but lengthy. Italy to Greece by ferry is scenic. Ancona or Bari to Patras or Igoumenitsa is popular. Takes 14–20 hrs but can be a great experience.

Ferries connect nearly all inhabited Greek islands from Piraeus port in Athens. Fast ferries (SeaJets, Golden Star) are pricier but cut journey times significantly.
Best for Long Distances · Domestic Flights
Sky Express and Olympic Air offer affordable domestic routes. Athens to Heraklion takes 45 mins by plane vs 8+ hrs by ferry. Often cheaper than you'd expect.
Best on Islands · Scooter or Car Hire
Most Greek islands are best explored by scooter or hire car. Buses cover main routes but a vehicle unlocks beaches and villages that tour buses don't reach.

Monastiraki & Plaka
The tourist heart of Athens: flea market, Acropolis views, ancient agora. Lively and central. Very convenient for first-timers but can feel busy.
Koukaki
Trendy, local neighbourhood just south of the Acropolis. Independent restaurants, cafés, and a more residential feel. Excellent value for boutique hotels.
Kolonaki
Upscale hilltop neighbourhood near the National Gallery and Syntagma. Home to designer shops, rooftop bars, and a wealthy Athenian clientele. Best for luxury stays.
Psiri & Metaxourgeio
Creative, gritty, and authentic. Street art, alternative bars, and some of Athens' best tavernas. Best for those who want to go beyond the tourist trail.

Best Day Trips from Athens
Delphi
2.5 hrs by bus. The ancient oracle sanctuary on Mount Parnassus, one of the most atmospherically sited ruins in all of Greece. The museum is exceptional.
Hydra (island)
2 hrs by hydrofoil from Piraeus. No cars or motorbikes are allowed on the island. Donkeys carry luggage. Beautiful, peaceful, and very photogenic.
Cape Sounion
1.5 hrs from Athens. The Temple of Poseidon stands on a clifftop above the Aegean, one of the most dramatic sunset viewpoints in the Mediterranean.
